Jørn Vestergaard slog banerekord på Jyllandsringen og tog rekorden i 1600-klassen

RACE – Jørn Vestergaard fra Hjerting kørte fra alt og alle, da han deltog i DM-finalen for 1600 Challenge-standardvogne på Jyllandsringen ved Silkeborg. Inden finalen lå han på 2. pladsen, kun 4 point efter den førende tredobbelte danmarksmester Steffen Larsen fra Ishøj.
Så der skulle rammes plet, og det må man sige at der blev gjort. Med tiden 1:19.197 fik Jørn den hurtigste tid i 1600-klassen nogensinde, og med en ny banerekord satte han den ellers suveræne Tommy Nygaard på plads til startplacering nummer 2 på ’gridden’. Den førende Steffen Larsen kvalificerede sig på 5. bedste tid.

Mulighederne for et danmarksmesterskab var nu i allerhøjeste grad til stede. Første heat gik planmæssigt, Jørn tog starten, men allerede på anden omgang sker det, som ikke må ske: Jørn bliver ramt hårdt af en gæstedeltager, så bilen måtte hårdt medtaget udgå.

Fandt nyt hjulophæng
Efter stor velvilje fra en anden deltager lykkedes det at finde et hjulophæng i Silkeborg, og efter en heroisk indsats fra teamets mekanikere lykkedes det 10 minutter før tid at få bilen ud til 2. heat. Mesterskabschancerne var nu med en startplacering som nummer 20 minimale. Der skulle kæmpes og betales tilbage til teamets mekanikere og supportere, et fedt heat med masser af overhalinger, som rakte til en slutplacering som nummer 4. Men første heat blev dyrt, så slutresultatet blev til en sammenlagt 3. plads i DM og et DM i oldboys-klassen. En godkendt sæson – men det var bare så tæt på.
